INTRODUCTION

The novel “Journey Of The Pale Bear”mainly tells the story of a runaway boy who becomes friends with a pale bear after experiencing all kinds of difficulties and dangers on the journey from Norway to London, thus triggering people's thinking on how to live in harmony with animals in the process of social development. Chapter 35-44 is selected for this translation practice.

Chapter 35 tells the story of Arthur in the process of looking for the pale bear, who found her fell into the trap set by the trappers, and then worked together to save her up. Chapter 36 shows us that when Arthur and the pale bear tired to escaped, the pale bear was seriously injured, and Arthur was treating the wounds of the pale bear, when the “trapper”suddenly appeared, Arthur and the pale bear jumped into the bay. Chapter 37 displays the story of Arthur and the pale bear swimming ashore to help the bear clean up her deteriorated wounds. The freed pale bear wanted to return to Norway (her hometown), but Arthur began to wander . Chapter 38 expresses that when Arthur woke up the next morning and found that the pale bear had changed the direction. Arthur ran after it with all his might, only to find that she had been caught by the captain. Chapter 39 tells us Arthur and pale bear were held separately. Arthur is worried that the pale bear will think that he has betrayed her and feel guilty about it. He is also worried about what the captain and others will do to him.While in custody, the doctor came to comfort Arthur. Chapter 40 is about the story of when the ship landed, Arthur was assigned to pacify the pale bear to prevent any accidents during the British king's inspection. In Chapter 41, the pale bear was “escorted” on the dray, Arthur was ordered to put on the noble and comfortable clothes, surrounded by soldiers and the public. Chapter 42 describes when they arrive at the tower of London, the king of England inspects the pale bear, then the bear is imprisoned in the tower of London. Chapter 43 tells the story of Arthur doesn't know where to go. The letter that took him home is lost and found, but it says he is not welcome back home. Chapter 44 is about the doctor who wants Arthur to go with him, but after they have booked tickets, the keeper of the pale bear begs Arthur to take care of the bear.

In the practice, firstly I will give a brief introduction to the text content and language style of the novel. Secondly, I will discuss the process of translation and its problems. Then I will focus on how to use the functional equivalence theory as the guiding principle and literal translation, transliteration, free translation ,amplification as the translation techniques to carry out text analysis. After solving a series of problems in the process of translation, the translation practice is summarized.

《白熊之旅》这本小说主要讲述了一个离家出走的男孩因缘巧合与一只白熊在从挪威到伦敦的旅途中经历种种艰难险阻之后成为了朋友，从而引发了人们在社会发展的历程中人类与动物该如何和谐相处的思考。 

本次翻译实践选取了第35-44章进行翻译。第35章讲述的是亚瑟在寻找白熊的过程中发现她掉进了捕兽者设下的陷阱里，然后协力一起把她救了上来。第36章讲述的是在亚瑟与白熊逃亡的过程中，白熊受伤严重，亚瑟在为白熊处理伤口时，“捕兽者”突然出现，亚瑟与白熊相继跳下海湾。第37章讲述的是亚瑟和白熊游上岸之后，帮助白熊清理她已经恶化的伤口，重获自由的白熊想回到挪威（她的家乡），而亚瑟却开始彷徨，看不到自己的未来。第38章讲述的是第二天早上醒来，亚瑟发现白熊改变了行进的方向，便使尽全身力气去追赶白熊，结果发现白熊被船长一行人抓住了。第39章讲述的是亚瑟和白熊被分别关押，亚瑟既担心白熊会以为是自己背叛了她，并对白熊产生愧疚之情，又担心船长等人会怎么处置自己。在被关押时，医生前来安抚并疏导亚瑟。第40章讲述的是船靠岸之后，亚瑟被指派去安抚白熊的情绪，以防止在英国国王检阅过程中出现任何意外。第41章讲述的是白熊被“押解”上了车，亚瑟也被勒令穿上高贵舒适的衣服，在士兵的包围和众人的注视下开始了游行、检阅。第42章讲述的是到达伦敦塔后，英国国王检阅了白熊，随后白熊关进了伦敦塔。第43章讲述的是亚瑟开始迷茫，不知该何去何从，那封能带自己回家的信失而复得，但是信里的内容却是不欢迎自己回家。第44章讲述的是医生希望亚瑟能跟自己走，但就在两人订好船票后，看守白熊的饲养员恳求亚瑟去照顾白熊。

在小论文部分，首先我会对该小说的文本内容和语言风格进行简述。其次就翻译的过程，及其间出现的问题进行探讨，重点介绍了如何以功能对等理论为指导原则，以直译、音译、意译和增译为翻译技巧来进行文本分析。在解决了一系列翻译过程中遇到的问题后，对该次翻译实践进行总结。
