第一章主要阐述战争与文学的关系。首先解释了战争文学的含义，概括了战争与文学的关系。反过来战争文学也真实再现了战争场面。第二章主要概述二战前的美国文学风格。首先分析了美国传统文学的特点。接着，又写美国青年受政府号召去往前线，准备为国家做贡献。可是事与愿违，这场战争并非正义性的。人们原有的价值观收到了冲击，出现了迷惘的一代。最后，分析“迷惘的一代”产生的原因及主要作家的作品。第三章概述了二战后的美国文学风格。以二战为分界线，论述了“垮掉的一代”与“迷惘的一代”写作风格的改变。第四章总结了第二次世界大战对美国文学写作风格的影响。简要概述了前三章的重点内容以及对后世的影响。
